Nuno, Conte, Son and Top 4

Spurs fans can be happy with the result they have managed to pull off with Champions League football to look forward to next season. However, it was not always like this. Before the start of the season, Tottenham appointed Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santos as their new gaffer. Despite winning all three games at the start of the season and being nominated as August’s Manager of the Month, Tottenham’s games under Nuno lacked tactical content and significance. The games that he won were mostly dependent on the individual ability of Son as Harry Kane was experiencing a dip in form due to the Man City transfer saga. As the abysmal games started to accumulate, the press were starting to speculate the possibly imminent end to his spell at Spurs. On the first day of November, Tottenham officially announced the sacking of Nuno Santos, just 3 months after his appointment. Tottenham wasted no time, announcing the appointment of Antonio Conte the day after. Despite the squad still lacking depth and quality, Son was bagging goals to carry Tottenham into the top half of the table. Conte’s tactics showed an immediate effect. Players had a flair in their eyes, motivated to play and compete. With Conte, Spurs were slowly climbing up into Europa spots. Harry Kane started to find his form mid-way into the season and Spurs were in 5th, right behind their London rivals, Arsenal.

The most pivotal game in Tottenham securing that Top 4 spot would be the game against Leicester. Spurs were trailing by a goal at the end of regular time. However, Bergwijn pulled off the impossible scoring 2 goals in the span of 2 minutes.

Towards the end of the season, the race for top 4 was getting heated. While Man city and Liverpool were battling for the Premier League title and Chelsea had pretty much secured 3rd place, the battle for top 4 was what caught the media’s attention. However, Arsenal slipped up in the last few games against Newcastle, giving way to Tottenham. With Son winning the Golden Boot, Tottenham’s season can be said to be picturesque.
