The dreams of a Quadruple, being second when it mattered most
Liverpool’s 21/22 season has been bittersweet, there were big ups and big downs. There was a lot of attention on the return of Virgil Van Dijk who was returning from an ACL injury that he sustained the previous season against Merseyside rivals Everton, where Van Dijk got his knee stuck between Pickford’s legs, snapping his ACL from the collision. Van Dijk was sidelined for 9-months since and there was question about whether he would ever be the same again.
The season was off to a good start, with Salah dominating the league with the most goals, followed by Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane. The first half of the season’s title race was between Liverpool and Chelsea. The addition of Ibrahima Konate to the back line was crucial in their season long success in all competitions. Looking back, the quick decision to hijack Luiz Diaz from Porto who was cumulating interest from Tottenham. Winning the Carrabao and FA Cup this season, it is hard to say that there season has been unsuccessful, having only finished a point under league champions Manchester City. However, the media’s constant spotlight of a potential quadruple makes it feel like Liverpool have underacheived.
Salah’s tweet that he wanted Real Madrid as there final opponent also didn’t age well. Having missed the final encounter between the two teams due to a broken arm inflicted by Sergio Ramos, Salah wanted a chance at redemption. He tweeted “We have a score to settle” which came back to bite him as Liverpool fell short by a goal to Real Madrid.
To summarize, Liverpool has had a successful season, despite falling short of what the media expects of them. With the new signings and time to recharge, Liverpool fans have all to look forward to in the coming season.
